WELCOME TO
SarahCare of Belden Village
Conveniently located near The Strip area of Canton across from Stark State College is SarahCare of Belden Village. Our center is large, bright, homey, and comfortable, and we have a full day planned for you! Make new friends and new memories when you join us for activities and exercise, crafts and clubs. Enjoy delicious, nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks served daily in the dining room, or go with the Lunch Bunch on a trip to one of the local restaurants. We know that sometimes the guys like to get together by themselves, and this is why we created The Men’s Club. This group meets in a separate area of the center where they watch sports, play cards, or just reminisce about old times.
There’s always something going on at SarahCare, and our seniors have multiple activities to choose from throughout the day. Our Activities Coordinators take our participants’ hobbies and interests into consideration when planning the calendar. In addition to our always busy craft room, our participants can choose to do some container gardening on the patio, some baking with the kitchen staff, or go on an outing to a local museum, restaurant, or sporting event.
AN ENTIRE TEAM AT YOUR SERVICE
Unlike home care where you get one person to care for your needs, when you come to SarahCare of Belden Village, you get an entire team to help address your needs as well as your wants. For the cost of less than about four hours of home care, you can receive a full day of care, activities, exercise, meals, outings, and nursing oversight. Our days revolve around the interests of our participants, so no two days are exactly alike.
Our direct care providers are specially trained to care for seniors who need varying levels of assistance. Unlike many other adult day or senior centers, we accept those who need the assistance of a cane, walker, or wheelchair, and can provide help with transfers and the activities of daily living. Your loved one with dementia will be gently and lovingly cared for in a safe, secure setting by caregivers with special dementia caregiving training. They feel especially rewarded by a smile or a hug, knowing they have helped to make someone’s day just a little bit brighter.
Each SarahCare Adult Day Health Center has RNs and LPNs on site during the day. They extend an extra level of care by:
- Monitoring blood pressure, glucose levels, and chronic health conditions
- Administering medications as prescribed by the participant’s physician
- Working with families and physicians to devise an individual plan of care
- Providing a Restorative Nursing program for those who would benefit from one
Activities are important to our participants and our Activities Coordinator’s goal is to keep everyone involved, happy, and engaged with their peers. You can see by our monthly activities calendar that our days are full. But no one is required to participate in the featured activity, as there are multiple activities running simultaneously and everyone has a choice of how they spend their time
Our Kitchen Coordinator makes sure that each participant receives a continental-style breakfast, full lunch, and afternoon snack each day and that the menu meets or exceeds the CACFP requirements for seniors. We encourage hydration by making available water, flavored water, coffee, tea, and milk throughout the day. For those who have special dietary needs or restrictions, we can provide soft, mechanically processed, diabetic meals, and even tube feedings. Just ask!
Our Transportation Drivers provide door-to-door service in our specially equipped wheelchair vans to participants to and from the center. DRIVE training is a program for drivers who regularly transport passengers with unique needs related to aging or disability and fulfills the transportation quality assurance standards required for providers under the Older Americans Act Title III services in Ohio and Ohio’s PASSPORT Medicaid Waiver program. Each of our drivers are required to complete DRIVE training prior to start, as well as Basic Life Support (CPR) and first aid training.
Our center’s Administrative Assistant is the first smiling face you see as you enter the building and ensure that everyone gets off to a good start. More than that, however, our Admins and our drivers are vital links between home and the center and communicate any concerns to our staff. Our Admins are also responsible for attendance and billing, as well as a whole host of behind-the-scenes operations that keep us running smoothly.
SarahCare Program Directors are the head of the team that provides the daily care for your loved one. Generally they have worked with SarahCare in other capacities and over time, have gained enough knowledge and experience to earn their position. Without a doubt, our Program Director is kind, compassionate, and empathetic. Program Directors work closely with all departments within the center to ensure that the needs of our participants and their families and caregivers are being addressed. If ever you have a problem or concern, please do not hesitate to contact them immediately.
We invite you to schedule a tour and a free trial day.
Let us show you how SarahCare can help.
robin’s story
Meet Patricia and Robin. They are the mother/daughter duo of SarahCare of Belden Village (Ohio), where Robin is the Program Director and Patricia is a participant. Like many people we know, Robin has a lot on her plate. She has a new husband – they were married in March of 2021 – and has a teenage son who lives at home. Her job and family keep her busy.
Patricia has had her share of health issues. She is a 29-year survivor of breast cancer, and has also survived four strokes, a brain bleed, kidney failure, and most recently, triple bypass heart surgery. Although she usually lives independently, her bypass surgery required her to have help to recover. Patricia did have home health services, but the agency discharged her due to staff shortages and being unable to provide care. The best option seemed to be to have Patricia move in with Robin and her family. But how could they provide the care and oversight that Patricia required when everyone worked or went to school?
Our founder, Dr. Merle Griff, a licensed psychologist working with children and families, was often asked this very question by families in her practice. By and large, families want to keep their loved ones at home and want to be able to care for them. Unfortunately, the reality is that other work and family obligations keep many of us from being able to act as full-time caregiver to our spouse, parents, or other loved one. This can lead to early placement in a nursing home or other facility when a family feels they have no other options. Dr. Griff saw a need and envisioned a solution, founding the first adult day center to open under the S.A.R.A.H. brand – now known as SarahCare – in downtown Canton, Ohio in 1985.
Not many years after opening the Canton center, Dr. Griff’s own mother suffered a severe stroke that left her with speech and mobility difficulties. She moved her mother into her home, but now she faced the very same issues as many of the families she saw. She was the mother of two active school aged boys, married to a busy physician, and now was running her own business plus a private psychology practice. Who would help provide the care her mother needed?
Dr. Griff and Robin had the answer at their fingertips. Both were able to enroll their mothers at SarahCare, keeping them with the families they loved, and avoiding costly residential care.
Robin realizes that she is lucky to be in the position to have her mom with her during the day in the very same center where she works, just as Dr. Griff was many years ago. Although Patricia has lived with Robin since August, she is preparing to move back to her own home in January after the holidays. That doesn’t mean, however, that Patricia is giving up attending SarahCare. Robin says that coming to the day center gives her mom purpose and she loves the socialization. She loves to befriend new participants and help them feel less anxious in their new environment.
We asked Robin what families need to know about SarahCare. She responded, “It’s a close knit, family environment with an array of programs and services, such as our on-staff nurses. Some people require more intense nursing care, but everyone gets a daily ‘check’ from our nurse. She lays eyes on and chats with each participant and knows if something is ‘off’ or has changed. Families find comfort in that.”
The emphasis is as much on a warm, comfortable feeling as it is on healthcare, so the center doesn’t feel institutional or cold. Robin says, “Participants see the same caregivers five days per week. They see their same friends. We truly do become like family, and everyone, staff included, enjoys that feeling of togetherness.”
Caregiving is an act of love. At each and every SarahCare Adult Day Health Center is a staff of caregivers who will take care of your loved one just as you would. And just like Patricia, each and every participant receives special treatment every day.
