Independent Living Skills

Independent living skills include assistance, training, or supervision to an individual in the areas of:

  • Self-Care
  • Communication Skills
  • Community living and mobility
  • Reduction/elimination of maladaptive behavior
  • Sensory/motor development
  • Socialization

The following are non-covered services:

  • Services duplicated with other Minnesota State plan or waiver services
  • ILS provided in licensed sites that are not the person’s home
  • Overnight Supervision

Examples of ILS in the person’s home and/or community setting:

  • Using the bus system to learn how to ride a bus
  • Learning how to deposit money by going to a bank or ATM
  • Cooking in the person’s kitchen

The method, materials, and settings used to provide ILS are designed to:

  • Provide skill training in an environment where the skill will be used
  • Increase the person’s independence by teaching skills so tasks and activities may be performed with deceased dependence on caregivers
  • Increase the person’s opportunities to interact with people without disabilities who are not paid caregivers
  • Provide daily schedules, routines, environments and interactions similiar to those of people without disabilities of the same chronological age
  • Support development of decision making skills and informed choices in all aspects of daily living including selection of service providers, goals and methods, location and decor of residence, roomates, daily routines, leisure activities and personal possessions.

Our Programs

  • Men’s Club — Special programs allow for men to get together for meaningful activities that promote socialization. Some examples of these activities include woodworking and model railroad building.
  • Tranquility Room — A calming place with a fireplace and waterfall allowing for relaxation and sensory stimulation. Also, a special place for elders to spend precious time and reminisce with family and friends.
  • Caregiver’s Support Group — An opportunity for caregivers to relate to others in similar situations. Caregivers receive advice for the unique problems of caring for their special loved one’s circumstances from expert speakers and presenters.  Meets the 3rd Thursday of every month from 5:00-6:00 pm at the center.
  • Concierge Services — We do everything we can to make life easier for the caregiver. Concierge services include dry cleaning and meals delivered right to the door of the SarahCare® Center. Other concierge services also available (please inquire).
  • Intergenerational Programming — Activities between older adults and children where both generations deeply benefit from each other and develop close bonds. Elders are energized by the children while the children recognize the elders’ value and learn that aging is a natural part of life.
  • Indoor golf, Bowling, Exercise and Other Physical Activities — A chance for participants to maintain and/or strengthen their physical abilities. Exercise programs are customized depending on the unique needs and desires of the person.
  • Music, Pet, Relaxation and Gardening Therapy — Guaranteed smiles every time. Different therapies allow clients to participate in everything from “sing-alongs” to pet therapy, gardening and deep relaxation.

Funding Sources available with SarahCare

As you consider having SarahCare provide services to your family, you may have questions regarding assistance that may be available in your community.  SarahCare has an on-going affiliation with the Area Agency on Aging and their CareCoor and Passport programs.  Another on-going affiliation with SarahCare is with the Veteran’s Association.

The above mentioned programs each have criteria requirements that must be met prior to funding being granted.  The Executive Director can help begin the process by making the referral.
